Miramichi Area Irish Memorials

The Miramichi area, in Northumberland County, New Brunswick, rivals the City of Saint John for the “most Irish area of the Province”. It was just off the shores of what is now Miramichi City in Northumberland County that many settlers arrived at Middle Island Quarantine Station in 1847 in hopes of coming on shore to start their new life in a strange new land. Some of these hopefuls made it; others did not and were subsequently laid to rest on the island – so close and yet so far.

In 1984, in memory of those unfortunates who never got the chance to take up their new life a memorial was erected on Middle Island.
