CLUFF/CLOUGH:

Francis CLUFF Sr.
was born c 1771, probably in Co. Tyrone, Ireland, and died in the Parish of Northampton, Carleton Co., NB, on 27 Feb., 1862, age 91 years; married, probably c. 1800/1801 to Martha SMITH, born c 1775, Ireland; died in Northampton on 11 February 1853, age 78 years.  Francis & Martha are buried in the Kirk Cemetery, Northampton.

Children:

  1. John CLUFF – b. Ireland 05 May 1802 – Source – Upper Woodstock Cemetery record. d. 29 April 1874.  Married, 26 September 1853 to Margaret GALLAGHER of Woodstock, b. in Ireland 20 October 1828, d. 14 October 1903 in Woodstock.
  2. Thomas CLUFF – b. 1803, bap. 11 December 1803; d. 13 December 1882 in Philadelphia, PA. at age 79.   He married, 14 April 1828, Sidney Jane CLARKE, born c 1811/12; d. 18 March 1891.  Both are buried at Mount Moriah Cemetery.
  3. Isaac CLUFF – b. 10 March 1813; died Bangor, Me., 09 April 1906, aged 93 years [burial – Kirk Cemetery]; m. Isabella ASHFORD of Saint John, NB on 5 Oct., 1843; b. c. 1814, in Ireland; d. Northampton, N.B., 31 Aug. 1875, aged 61 years.
  4. Hugh H. CLUFF – b. c. March 1814; d. 05 June 1883.  He married, c. 1852, Jane Elizabeth JOHNSON, a native of Dublin, Ireland, b. November 1824; d. 1 October 1907. Hugh & his wife are buried in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Bangor, Maine.
  5. Mary Ann CLUFF – bap. 16 June 1815, Kilskeery Parish, County Tyrone, on the northern border of County Fermanagh, Ireland; d. 25 March 1888, age 73.  m. Joseph HEMPHILL, Northampton, N.B. on 30 December 1847.  No known children.
  6. Samuel CLUFF – b. 10 June 1817; bap. 19 October 1817 at Church of Ireland, Kilskeery, Johnston Townland, Co. Tyrone, Ireland; d. 13 March 1905; m., 27 December 1849 to Jane HEMPHILL, daughter of William and Margery (Kerr) Hemphill, b. 10 September 1823 near Castlederg, Co. Tyrone; d. 30 November 1903.  Samuel and Jane are buried in the Kirk Cemetery, Northampton, N.B.
  7. Francis CLUFF Jr. – b. c. January 1821 in County Tyrone, Ireland; d. 05 July 1896; m. 16 March 1848, to Jane GRANT, the 15th of 16 children of William Grant and Anna Maidstone Hillman, b. 02 November 1823; d. 19 December 1906, aged 83 years.

NOTE: It is unknown whether Thomas Cluff (below), of Bloomfield, b c 1780 in Co. Fermanagh, was related to Francis Cluff Sr. of Northampton, b c 1771 in Co.Tyrone. 


Thomas CLUFF
was born in Ireland c. 1780 and emigrated with his wife, 2 sons and 2 daughters on 01 July 1841.  His wife, Mary, died on July 12, 1841 and daughter, Bell, died 18 July 1841.  Thomas died at his residence in Bloomfield in May of 1861. [Source – The Carleton Sentinel, May 11, 1861]

CHILDREN of Thomas and Mary CLUFF:

  1. William, b. 25 December 1809; d. 10 January 1897; unmarried
  2. Elizabeth, b. c. 1810, d. 01 September 1894 in Woodstock; m. James McCANN in New Brunswick in the early 1840s.  He was b. c. 1811, in Ireland, d. in Woodstock on 25 July 1884. 
  3. Sidney, b. c. 1823.  Is listed in various accounts as being unmarried or widowed with 2 children, although always with the surname CLUFF.
  4. Mary, b. c. 1825??
  5. Isaac, b. c. 1826
  6. Bell, b. c. 1827, d. 18 July 1841
  7. Richard, b. c. 1832
